"Are Your Kids Turning Punk?"

This photographic series depicts children as a stereotypical punk within the idea of the children. Children often mimic behaviors that they see and think are cool. This series shows these specific children's interpretation of what they believe a punk is like. This ultimately meant photographing at a skatepark, a tattoo shop, and outside on a bike that looked like a motorcycle. When starting this project I wanted the children to have complete control of how they dressed, did their makeup, their hair, how they “tattooed” themselves, and where we took the pictures. I wanted this to be what they envisioned this type of life to be like. The use of bright color contrasting the overall grunge aesthetic to the photos creates a conversation of children acting like adults. Although these children are representing adult culture, the messy painted tattoos and bright colors remind us that they are still kids playing pretend. I looked at photographers Sally Mann, Nan Goldin, Roberta Bayley, and David Godlis for inspiration. 2020.
